Het beschrijft Buurtzorg Nederland, een casus in de thuiszorg vanwege haar radicaal gedecentraliseerde structuur en integratieve, autonoom systeem van organiseren. Gegevens werden verzameld door het bestuderen van de reacties van betrokkenen bij Buurtzorg tijdens de eerste lockdowns als gevolg van de COVID-19 pandemie. Er wordt gebruik gemaakt van een formatieve grounded theory methodologie gebaseerd op theoretische steekproeftrekking met behulp van twee aanvullende kwalitatieve datasets. Het artikel toont aan dat de vereenvoudiging van organisatiestructuren door integratieve zelfsturing helpt om het doel van de organisatie centraal te stellen. Zelfs in tijden van een COVID-19 pandemie is deze gedecentraliseerde organisatiearchitectuur versterkend.
